Proposed 2000-megawatt energy project would contain 1,000 wind turbines. Fort Collins, CO (Vocus/PRWEB ) September 4, 2008 -– ENSR has been selected by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to prepare the environmental impact statement (EIS) for a major new wind energy project proposed by the Power Company of Wyoming. ENSR, a leading environmental services firm, is part of AECOM, a global provider of professional technical and management support services. The Power Company of Wyoming filed right-of-way applications with the BLM Rawlins Field Office to develop two wind farms on 98,000 acres in the Rawlins and Carbon County areas of Wyoming. The projects would be located partially on federal lands administered by BLM, and on interspersed private lands. Livestock grazing (the current land use) would continue after the project is developed. The proposed 1,000 turbine wind energy project on the two sites would provide 2,000 megawatts of power to the national electric power grid, establishing Wyoming as the third-largest wind energy generation state, behind Texas and California. ENSR was selected to assist the BLM with preparing the EIS because of its environmental permitting and management experience with large, complex energy projects. Expected issues to be addressed in the EIS include effects on wildlife and cultural resources, and changes in the appearance of rural landscapes from installation of large wind turbines. Over the past 10 years ENSR has completed over 30 environmental impact statements for industrial development projects under the direction of the BLM and other federal agencies. These projects have included oil and gas field developments, natural gas and natural gas liquids pipelines, electrical transmission lines, power plants, and precious metal mines. “We are looking forward to analyzing a wind energy project at such a large geographic scale,” said Scott Ellis, ENSR’s Director of Capital Permitting. “Wind power will have a prominent role in the expansion of America’s use of renewable energy resources. We are committed to assisting the BLM to prepare a technically sound and comprehensive EIS, since this project will likely serve as a model for future large wind energy developments on federal lands in the western U.S.” The BLM, which provides opportunities for public participation during the EIS process, held several public scoping meetings in Carbon County, Wyoming in August. “Fifty for Fifty” Initiative to Engage State Legislators in Every State to Develop Green Schools Caucuses Washington, DC (Vocus/PRWEB ) September 4, 2008 — Today, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) kicked off its “Fifty for Fifty” initiative working with state lawmakers in all 50 states to promote green school buildings. The Council’s goal is for every state legislature in the nation to have its own caucus or working group of lawmakers advancing green schools for kids. Inspired by the successes of the Congressional Green Schools Caucus, the initiative will build on widespread participation in USGBC’s LEED for schools program, which has over 1,000 green schools registered across the U.S.
At an event held this afternoon in Washington, DC at the National Press Club, the “Fifty for Fifty” Initiative provides state legislators with:
State legislators launching the initiative will include:
“For students and families across the country, more green schools ultimately mean more effective educational facilities, significant operating costs savings, a better environment, and healthier communities,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, USGBC. “The caucuses will add the significant weight of their voices to this critically important effort. If we’re successful at creating green schools for every child, no matter his or her economic bracket, we’ll raise a generation of smart, healthier, inspired kids.” “Green school buildings and a supporting curriculum around their economic, environmental and societal benefits will prepare our students of today to live in tomorrow’s resource constrained world. Energy conservation will be a part of daily life in the future. It’s not enough to tell students that fact. We need to give them multiple opportunities to learn how to be more environmentally conscious and why it matters so much,” said the Honorable Kenneth Plum, Virginia. As the school year begins, nearly 1,000 school buildings - from Tacoma, Wash., to Tallahassee, Fla., - will have met or are seeking LEED green school certification, with applications growing at a rate of more than one per day. The total number of square feet of LEED certified and registered school space will exceed 100 million square feet as the school year gets underway, according to new figures released by USGBC. Texans for a Sound Energy Policy Alliance (TSEPA) to Host Oct. 9 Public Forum Victoria, TX (PRWEB) September 4, 2008 — Members of Texans for a Sound Energy Policy Alliance (TSEPA) today warned Victoria County residents that serious safety and environmental questions remain unanswered - even as Exelon moves forward in filing for a nuclear reactor construction license. On Sept. 3, Exelon formally submitted an application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission seeking to build and operate a nuclear plant on an 11,500-acre tract of land in Victoria County. TSEPA members and other concerned citizens across the county and state have asked Exelon to first answer questions on the potential negative impact such a plant will have. “Exelon talks of being a good neighbor in Victoria County, but still hasn’t addressed the long-term safety and environmental questions shared by many of us who live here in the Guadalupe River basin,” said TSEPA Director John Figer. “That may be a standard practice in Illinois and other states where Exelon has had its way, but in Texas good neighbors work and talk to find true resolution before building something that’s going to affect people, land and water.” Figer noted that the site of the proposed nuclear power plant introduces serious safety and environmental concerns for the community while critically impacting the region’s water supply. Water remains a key concern with legitimate questions on whether there is enough water in the Guadalupe River basin to support a nuclear power plant. “When we ask for specifics, we’re told ‘Trust us,’” Figer said. “In Texas, trust is earned. By ignoring the serious questions of concerned neighbors, Exelon’s actions speak louder than its words.” To help educate Victoria County residents on nuclear reactors and the impact this proposed plant could have on this region, TSEPA will host a community forum on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts, 214 N. Main St. The forum will feature Arjun Makhijani, President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in Takoma Park, Maryland. Dr.Makhijani has a PhD from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences of the University of Berkeley, where he specialized in nuclear fusion. A recognized authority on energy issues, Dr. Makhijani has testified before Congress and appeared on ABC, CBS, CNN. He is the author and co-author of numerous reports and books on energy and environment related issues. He was the principal author of the first study of the energy efficiency potential of the US economy published in 1971. He is the author of Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy (2007). TSEPA’s mission is to support a Texas energy supply policy that is reasonable, sustainable and environmentally sound. The main goal is to ensure the process of approving the proposed nuclear power plant is not rushed or secretive. Along with seeking public opinion and community participation in the process, TSEPA has retained engineers, hydrologists, attorneys, and economic and environmental consultants to conduct independent studies to answer questions and highlight any problems that may be identified. To learn more about TSEPA and its concerns regarding the proposed nuclear reactor, visit www.speakupvictoria.com. See Also:
