Burning Hawk, Seghesio, Benziger and DeLoach Wineries Join Popular Facebook Application, Green My Vino
Burning Hawk, Seghesio Family Vineyards, Benziger Family Winery, and DeLoach Vineyards announced this week that they have joined the popular Facebook application, Green My Vino. The application, developed by renewable energy provider Village Green Energy, leverages the power of Facebook’s social network to motivate positive environmental action in the wine industry. San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) August 20, 2008 — Burning Hawk, Seghesio Family Vineyards, Benziger Family Winery, and DeLoach Vineyards announced this week that they have joined the popular Facebook application, Green My Vino. The application, developed by renewable energy provider Village Green Energy, leverages the power of Facebook’s social network to motivate positive environmental action in the wine industry. In its first six days of operation, Green My Vino, raised $10,000 for renewable energy resources in California and converted four wineries to clean energy. At this pace, in just one month, the funds raised by Green My Vino could rival those generated by any other environmental Facebook application to date. Green My Vino enables Facebook users to give each other free online gifts. Each winery commits to powering its operations with renewable energy as certain gifting milestones are achieved. Based on the initial success of the application, new wineries have been eager to jump on board. The new wineries join Iron Horse Vineyards, Girard Winery, Windsor Vineyards, and Windsor Sonoma in the efforts to convert the California wine industry to clean energy. Burning Hawk joins the effort on the day of announcing their charitable wine label. Burning Hawk plans on donating ten percent of the proceeds from each bottle sold towards research that will prevent bird deaths related to power lines and the prospects of climate change. Nick Papadopoulos was an initial creator of Green My Vino, but waited for the release of Burning Hawk to announce his involvement. “The Green My Vino application fits our mission because climate change represents a significant threat to the birds that Burning Hawk seeks to protect.” Seghesio Family Winery owner Pete Seghesio installed solar at his winery two years ago, to generate half of the power the winery needs to operate. “Green My Vino is a great way to go 100% renewable, while at the same time connecting with new Seghesio wine drinkers,” said Pete Seghesio. Benziger Family Winery is planning on installing solar at their facilities within the next couple of years, but was looking for meaningful ways to get involved with the renewable energy movement in the meantime. “When this opportunity arose, we new it was a perfect fit,” said Mimi Gatens, Director of Sustainability at Benziger. DeLoach Vineyards, a renowned pioneer of Pinot Noir, is the most recent participant in Green My Vino. “Our mission is to produce increasingly exceptional wines that spotlight the unique terroirs of the Russian River Valley and beyond in a socially responsible, environmentally sensitive way,” said Lisa Heisinger, General Manager of DeLoach Vineyards. The Green My Vino user base is growing by nearly 20% per day, with thousands of current active users. Green My Vino is still accepting participating wineries that want to step up and join the effort to green the California Wine Country. The application website off of Facebook can be found at www.villagegreenenergy.com/facebook. Here visitors can track the application’s progress, learn more about renewable power and ways to help, and get involved in outreach efforts on behalf of green power.
